Demos, Auditions, Samples: Getting started in VoiceOver #16

ANY industry “common” terminology isn’t common until you know it!

Today’s episode is about the difference between a Demo, a Sample and an Audition. As with any technical lingo, there are cross-overs here, but this should help you a bit.

What can I record for you?

Scary foreboding dark Halloween voices!

A few different fun character voices!

Audio Processing and “Soundscaping”

We are asked to do many things as #voiceartists and creating a #soundscape as it were. I include three examples!

What can I record for you?

Phone Messaging & IVR

For a while now, I’ve been calling various production businesses to discover if they might be taking demos for new artists. I was amazed at how many (apparently) operating businesses had

  • REALLY bad phone message (no clarity, confusing, and worse)
  • NO message- just the standard, “Please leave a message…” that came as a default.
  • There is no voice mail set up for this line. (REALLY?!? You’re a business!!)

It might be time to hire a professional #voiceartist to record the message on your system. Customize for specials or directing customers! And if you’re in a different country or need a female talent, let me know! I know people!! .

Let’s talk! What can I record for you?

John The Templar Knight and Pirate Penguins. (yup!)

Another “business is growing” week and looks like I’ll have another record month! This week was more character work (short demo inside!) and corporate work. Busy, busy, busy!! Please take a moment to share!!

What can I record for you?

Corporate Explainers (Try this one with me!)

Scripts vary from day to day and we never know what we’re going to see next. It keeps this business interesting! Watch to see the fun sentence I got to do this week!

What can I record for you?

Movie Trailers & Video Game Trailers!

What’s a Voice Artist do?

The infamous “In a Land”, “In a World”… made famous by Don LaFontaine, we’re often called on with a deep booming voice to introduce or voice that commercial. Just as often, its for fun, like that wedding toast mentioned last week!

Greetings and Salutations! (We do that too!)

Most people think, “I don’t have a business. How would I use a #voiceactor? Great question! I’ve done several graduation “honorarium” type scripts where the parents have written nice scripts honoring their graduating senior and then they (or I can do your #videoproduction also) put the #voiceover with pictures from the graduates childhood. I talk about a couple other ideas in the video.

Some other ideas:

Birthday greetings

Funeral Remembrances

Wedding toasts

Recording Commercials

I just KNOW you’re surprised!! (not)

A HUGE amount of voice over work that comes our way is recording commercials!

I chat a bit about the process (abbreviated, of course) and play a sample of a commercial I conceived, wrote, produced for demonstration purposes.

What is a DAW? Find out!

Simply put, a Digital Audio Workstation coverts the signal from your mic/interface into visible, editable sound.

The two I suggest using are:

Audacity: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ -pretty much free to use. Great to start with, easy to understand, a LOT of youtube stuff out there to help you

Reaper: https://www.reaper.fm/download.php -60 day free evaluation period and pretty inexpensive to purchase. –Booth Junkie: Watch/use his series on setting up Reaper for VO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZ6UxFujx4&list=PLzEW-dm_vsRvfiH9RVKAJA6Vd2CccnVmn

Kenny Gioia’s “Reaper Mania” is the next to watch. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq297H7Ca98HlB5mVFHGSsQ
